DescriptionA great hiking trail, also good for running if you are early enough to avoid the crowds, this trail combines with the crater rim trail to make a 4 mile loop. If you are running it, it's a bit technical in spots, the crater rim section is flatter and more run-friendly. The Kilauea Iki section is a bit rougher. For a hike, I'd recommend doing the loop counter clockwise, as the trail map walks through the story of the eruption in a sequential fashion. For a run, I'd recommend going clockwise, as I think it's easier to run UP the steepest section of the trail rather than down and it would be going against most of the oncoming foot traffic. 10$ per car to get into the park (good for a week), and there are bathrooms at the Thurston tube parking area. You can park either there or the Kilauea lookout for this hike or run.
