DescriptionA good starting point to access the miles of trails in the Tennessee Valley/Gerbode Valley section of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), or get in a short, shady, out & back. Oakwood Valley single-track trail and the same named fire road both start in the same general area (fire road has a white gate across it) and merge together 0.7 miles up the trail. Go another 0.6 miles uphill to intersect with Alta Trail (making Oakwood 1.3 miles one-way). Once you reach Alta you're off to the races with endless trail options and route distances taking you throughout this section of the GGNRA Trails are well-marked, but it's always good to have a map with you, since there are many loop/out & back options.

Lower portion of fire road (first 0.7 miles or so) is stroller-friendly and a nice shaded walk with young ones; trail gets narrower, steeper and contains steps farther up. Popular trail for dog walking.
