DescriptionA popular spot to access the eastern side of the Marin Headlands/Golden Gate National Recreation Area with amazing views of Richardson Bay, Sausalito, San Francisco & East Bay on clear days. This trail access point takes out some of the steep grades experienced at Tennessee Valley (because parking area is up the hill rather than in the valley). Alta Trail intersects with many other fire roads & single track within GGNRA, giving you out & backs and loops of varying distances. The GGNRA land is well-signed at trail intersection points (you enter GGNRA land about 1/4 mile from the trail entrance. There is a noticeable information sign). Since you park up the hill, I've said this is family friendly; however, note that it is also technical (soft surface, rocky in places, but certainly navigable for little feet!). This is also a popular spot for dog walking. Trash cans in the parking area for dog waste are maintained by the Dog Walkers of the GGNRA (big thanks to them!).
