Local TipsMostly shady until you get to Southern Marin Line Fire Road. Trail is rooty, probably best for hiking/walking over running.

DescriptionThis is a relatively flat hike/run following Larkspur creek for much of the route. Creek & waterfall was mostly dry first time I was there (late July) but flows in winter/spring/early summer. The trail has some older growth redwoods but most vegetation is new growth due to the loggging that occurred in this area a century ago. As you approach the falls (approx. 2 miles from Magnolia Ave), the trail will climb steeply along short single-track switchbacks, eventually topping out at Southern Marin Line Fire Road. There are endless options to extend your route for many miles at this point (see Baltimore Canyon open space map from Marin County: http://www.marincounty.org/~/media/images/departments/pk/open-space/baltimore-canyon/map-3-baltimore073114.pdf).

Pin is dropped at beginning of trail at the end of Madrone Ave (meaning approx 1.1 mile of trail). This is a popular trail so parking on this small neighborhood street can be tough. As an alternative, you can park on neighborhood streets off of Magnolia Ave close to Dolliver Park (bathrooms here) & run/walk up Madrone to get 2 miles one-way [road + trail] (& see interesting architecture and natural traffic calming in the redwood trees!). A third alternative is to access the trail from the short forest service road at the end of Piedmont (another neighborhood street off Magnolia). All options will lead you to Dawn Falls Trail.
