DescriptionA wonderful place to walk and appreciate the history of NYC. Approximately 1.5 miles one-way, The Highline is a transformed historic elevated freight line along Manhattan's West Side, saved in the late '90s/early 2000s from demolition (the last train ran on the line in 1980, carrying a trainload of frozen turkeys http://www.thehighline.org/visit). The first section opened in 2009. The Highline runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues. The hardscape (path, seating areas, railings) are beautifully designed, and the plantings are wonderful across the seasons. Pin is dropped at Gansevoort St access point but several stairs/elevators exist along the route.
