DescriptionOnly 1.9 miles up, 1.9 miles down, but allow at least 4 hours hike time for this hike to the summit of Mt. Monadnock. The trail starts out as a wooded trail, but after the white dot trial splits off this turns into more of a scramble. The trail goes directly up the side of the mountain, no switchbacks, so expect steep grades, scrambling around large rocks and the like. Not for the faint of heart, but you will be rewarded with panoramic vistas from about 3/4 the way up the trail. 1.6 miles for the parking field, is where white cross trail intersects. About half of the hikers, turn back at white cross, and about half continue on the the summit. The summit is rocky without trees, so the views are pretty good. The recommended descent is to take white cross down, which is less steep, but follows a stream bed so is more wet. We went on a day after heavy rains and it was hard to keep the feet dry. The trail was really too technical (for me at least) to try to run it which was my only disappointment.. $5 entry per person - this is apparently one of the most climbed mountains in the world so get here early, it's really nice and a little less crowded in the fall.
