DescriptionA classic spot in North County for a run or walk. You'll never get tired of watching the pelicans glide along the surface of the ocean, or surfers waiting for the perfect wave. There are 2 options running south from Powerhouse Park: run along the beach (easier at low tide) or on the mostly dirt path (+ a few rocky areas) along the cliff. You are running next to the train tracks for this latter option and technically it is RR company land. It is a frequently used route, however, and a fact of life in many coastal areas of So Cal that you are beside or crossing tracks (safely!!). It is just over 1.5 miles from Powerhouse Park to the Torrey Pines State Park inlet. Keep running south to get more distance (Torrey Pines is great!).

There is a great grassy area for relaxing & people watching after the run, and a wonderful play area for kids. This area is busy on the weekends; arrive early for a beautiful morning run, or later for sunset.

Street parking is available (free & metered), as well as paid parking lots. Bathrooms located on the lower level of the Powerhouse Community Center & at the lifeguard building. Water fountains and outdoor showers are also present at the park. Dogs on leash.

  • One of my favorite runs in San Diego, I love extending the route into Torrey Pines State Park (hill warning!). If I'm really trying to get in some miles I'll run to the glider port across from UCSD and circle back. Highly recommended! ( by JoshCox on 2014-10-20 )
