DescriptionIf you love open, mildly challenging trails with great scenery, try this trail. Upper section north of I-64/I-75 trail underpass undulates though working horse farms and ends at the Kentucky Horse Park campground entrance. The middle section meanders through the relatively flat UK Coldstream Research Park and the lower section runs alternatively along Citation Blvd, crosses Newtown Pike runs south through rolling woods, going over New Circle via a road overpass, skirts the headquarters campus of Lexmark and ends at the Y. There are bike tool stations provided by a local bike shop (shown) and parking at both ends and in the middle. There are numerous spurs and loops especially in Coldstream for variety.

Comments

  • The trail passes under the combined I-64/I-77 interstate. It is a shared access with the gated UK farms on either side. You may need to give a brief right of way to farm trucks. The signs warn about trespass. Be aware the Kentucky has a broad Farm Animal law. If you are attacked by a farm (horse, cow etc...) animal on farm or livestock property, it is presumed you understood the danger you put yourself in whether voluntary or by trespass and limits owners liability. Also be aware that thoroughbred horses and amazingly beautiful animals but some can't always tell the difference between a carrot and finger..... ( by Nick on 2014-05-19 )
  • The trail surface through Coldstream is a porous formed crushed rock surface. I believe this is related to eco concerns regarding drainage. Anyway, it's softer than concrete but not as soft as asphalt and cycling is a slightly vibrating experience. ( by Nick on 2014-04-24 )
  • You can enter Coldstream using Aristides or Citation Blvds. Aristides, as can be seen in the photo of the marker, was the upset winner, with his jockey, Oliver Lewis, of the inaugural Kentucky Derby. Citation was a Triple Crown winner in 1948 and shares the mantle of winningest horse in consecutive races (16 victories) with two current Lexington residents: Zenyatta, now a brood mare at Lane's End Farm; and Cigar, who is residing in the Hall of Champions at the neighboring Kentucky Horse Park and can be viewed along with other champion horses. (You can also view Man O' War's grave as well.) ( by Nick on 2014-04-20 )
